JAG program builds success for students
Smith-Cotton’s Jobs For America’s Graduates program has laid a strong foundation for communication and success among its members.
Business teacher Amanda Harvey has been the JAG sponsor since last year; she describes JAG as a program that focuses on transitioning to life after high school through work skills, career exploration, and self development. Although JAG has only been operating at S-C for two years, it has been around for 40 and 80 different schools in Missouri offer this program.
The goal of this program is to support students and help them reach both academic and economic success. This program is offered as a full year class, where Harvey will help students with questions about college, job knowledge, life skills, and so many more valuable topics.
“These students have someone in their own corner to help them with things they need. They can come to me for almost anything,” Harvey said.
When students apply for this program, they make a commitment to stay in contact with Harvey for a full year after graduation. They are required to check in at least once every month during that time to let Harvey know how school, work, and other important life commitments are going.
“Not a day goes by that I don’t receive a message from one of the students in JAG last year,” said Harvey.
JAG just held a pumpkin decorating contest for its members; after the “best looking pumpkin” was selected, the pumpkins will be taken to the Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center to spread some Halloween spirit to the residents there.
JAG students also have plans to help at the Trunk or Treat, as well as future plans to help with the Center for Human Services’ annual Turkey Trot and hand out hot chocolate at the Christmas Parade. There are multiple community service opportunities for students throughout the year in hopes to build the importance of giving back to the community.
On Nov. 4, JAG will be holding their initiation and installation ceremony during fifth hour.
