Band scores big at Alamo Bowl in Texas
Smith-Cotton’s band had a successful trip to San Antonio over Christmas break this year, performing as part of the Alamo Bowl and bringing home many awards.
The band performed its field show and in the parade at the competition. The band walked away with first place in parade, second place in field show, outstanding marching, outstanding music, outstanding auxiliary, and outstanding general effect.
Emily Beltran, senior, said, “We practiced a lot for this in and out of class.”
When they got to the competition, they practiced two more days. Band Director Grant Maledy said, “They’re great kids and they work hard.”
Sarah Bradbury, senior said, “It was exciting being in front of a new and big crowd and there was also a more professional feeling.”
Beltran and Bradbury are both drum majors for Smith-Cotton’s band. After competing, the band performed at the Alamo Bowl game in the halftime performance. There were around 15 other bands performing, too.
“It was cool meeting the other kids in the band,” said Beltran. “There were so many people there, it was really fun for everyone.”
Along with those two things band also had some more fun. Students got the choice to tour the Alamo. Band also went to Six Flags, which was one of Bradbury’s favorite things they did. They also enjoyed time at the beach in Corpus Christi.
“I feel like the band really bonded during the trip,” Beltran said.
Band returned home with their arms full of trophies, and are ready to improve even more.
Maledy said, “I think they got to see how things are the same and different and hopefully it motivates them to excel.”
This will be Bradbury and Beltran’s last year in band, so they have lots of hopes for the future of Smith-Cotton’s Band.
Bradbury said “I’m excited to see the growth of the band, and individuals in the band. I’m so thankful the school district let us go.”
