Boys and Girls clubs offer work, scholarships
The Boys and Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri has many opportunities to offer to students at Smith-Cotton.
Volunteer hours at the Boys and Girls Club can be used for the state’s A+ program. The club is looking for students who can help youth members read and do their homework. Volunteers also can participate in arts and crafts and other hobbies. Boys and Girls Club Communications Director Emily Schmidt said that volunteer opportunities like this are good for college resumes and give students a good “first job” experience.
Another benefit of volunteering at the club is the junior staff program. The student must start as a volunteer and meet a certain number of requirements to be hired on as a part timer. Junior staffers are Boys and Girls Club members, so they must pay the $10 yearly membership fee and volunteer at the club on a frequent basis.
Not only does Boys and Girls Club offer A+ hours, but it is now offering a scholarship for seniors. In honor of the Boys and Girls Clubs’ 60th anniversary, it is offering $500 each to two seniors who previously were club members. To submit a scholarship application, the student must write a short essay with their transcript included. The money can be used for anything school-related that the student might need.
Senior class Counselor Katie Ellis believes that this scholarship opportunity is something that former Club members should take advantage of.
“This scholarship is just another way of the Boys and Girls Club giving back to the students in West Central Missouri,” said Ellis.
Scholarship applications are due to the counseling office on April 1.
