Senior Profile: Roman Morelos
Senior Roman Morelos is involved in his fair share of activities, and is leaving his mark on Smith-Cotton with one idea: Anything is possible.
Morelos is involved in JROTC, HOSA, band, National Honor Society and Tiger Tutors. He has achieved many accomplishments throughout his time in high school, including attending the HOSA international competition and being awarded the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Award for JROTC. He is also the woodwind captain for S-C’s Tiger Pride Marching Band.
“I personally consider getting to see my kids for Tiger Tutors an accomplishment all on its own,” said Morelos.
Being involved in so much does not come easily. Morelos admits that sometimes he has struggled with academics and staying focused, but he believes all challenges are learning opportunities. Morelos credits his teachers in helping him develop and overcome his struggles.
JROTC instructor Lt. Col. Harry Cunningham describes Morelos as a serious and focused student.
“He always delves very deeply into every topic we cover,” said Cunningham, who also notices the leadership traits Morelos portrays when he interacts with other cadets. Morelos enjoys watching new cadets come through the JROTC program and encourages them every step of the way.
“Throughout the course of the year, the development of these kids can really touch your heart,” he said.
Morelos’ teachers aren’t the only ones noticing his leadership qualities. Fellow band member Tyler Soendker, a junior, said that Morelos is always one to problem-solve and step up and take the lead. \
“Roman has helped me to be a better leader and inspired me to find enjoyment even in the little things in life,” Soendker added.
Although Morelos has been involved in many extracurricular activities, he said he would try to be involved in more social groups if he could redo his high school experience. He admits that it took time to find himself and become confident.
“It took me a while to fully accept myself as a person and break free from my shell,” Morelos said.
Morelos advises underclass to get involved and make the most out of their high school experience, as it only happens once. He noted that keeping busy and involved in high school will help with future jobs.
Following high school, Morelos plans to attend the University of Central Missouri to major in biology. Although his time is finished at S-C, many will remember his leadership and personality.
“I will always remember the way he answers questions … he is more thorough when answering a question than any cadet I’ve ever had. We will miss Cadet Morelos,” said Cunningham.
Morelos is thankful for all of his experiences and believes his time at S-C has shaped him into a well-rounded person who is ready to take on any future challenges.
“The journey will always be more important than the destination,” said Morelos.
