Horace Mann Elementary Veterans Education

  • During a three-week project of studying what is a veteran, what does reverence mean and learning about the beauty of Sedalia history, Horace Mann Elementary School students recently took a field trip to the Pettis County Courthouse. Mr. Cliff McBride, a decorated and distinguished Marine veteran, spoke to second, third and fourth graders in librarian Kellie Eichler’s library specials.

“Cliff gave the gift of time by coming to our school and sharing his knowledge of the monuments around the courthouse lawn. Last week we walked around the courtyard to see the markers and memorials firsthand. To know Mr. McBride is to know valor, nobility and wisdom with charm. I’m so thankful for all who are keepers of history, making sure stories are not lost,” said Eichler.

Students also placed flowers at one of the monuments. “While celebrating thanksgiving, freedom and the people who have served is the lesson, it’s also teaching kids to love the town they live in,” she said.
